Nowadays, more and more shooters are becoming aware of the importance of eye/rib alignment than ever before, and I am often being asked to check their gunfit.

This is a much misunderstood term, because gun fitting is not just about dry-fitting the gun to the shooter so that it appears to be of the correct dimensions when properly mounted. This 'dry-fitting' does not identify any problems which may exist when 'live firing'.

The main elements of gun fitting are correct stance, gun mount, grip, and consistent use of a sound technique for hitting a moving target. Only then can correctly applied alterations to the gun be of any help.

There are many basic common problems encountered with shotgun shooters who have never had any formal tuition, and problems must be approached in a logical and controlled manner, improving the shooter step by step.

If you look at the world of competitive sport you will usually find that those who are the most successful use reliable coaches to help them plan and maintain their progress.

Now I am not posting this to obtain more work for coaches, I am simply saying that if anyone want's a gun-fit check, it would be prudent to have it checked whilst live-firing, rather than just in a prone position, where quite often, the shooter can create a good gun-fit.

Jim: Thanks, You're a bit of a wise owl yourself fella, I've seen your posts on SGW.

Sidibear: I won't ask how many the 21 was out of, but of course, if you get up to my neck of the woods, I will do my humble best to help you.

Cheers lads, Pirate:

P.s Sidibear. If you bring 'Bad' to a new level, try talking to Knave! You two would make interesting reading for sure.

Sidibear,
Pirate has asked me to post for him, as his Internet connection is down.

Although he doesn't like to assume, he thinks your 21% could suggest possible cross dominant eye issues.

One way of checking this is to visit http://www.easyhit.co.uk/ Although he isn't suggesting you buy one, you will find a step by step guide to checking eye dominance.

If you are in any doubt, seek the opinion of a reputable local Coach, who shouldn't charge for such a simple service.

I hope this is helpful. Pirate should be back on-line within 48 hours.

Regards. Jeff

My problem is that I don't shoot clays very often and have never had any coaching whatsoever.
I am right eye dominant, I do a lot of target shooting as well as archery.

When I shoot clays I point the gun to where I think its going to be by the time the shot gets to it, kinda like plotting a point in the sky where to shoot.

If they stayed still just before I pulled the trigger I wouldn't have a problem Laughing Laughing
